Malta Mosaic: Building Unity in Diversity - European Youth Week 2026

On 9 May 2026, TDM 2000 Malta successfully organised Malta Mosaic: Building Unity in Diversity, an interactive workshop held as part of European Youth Week 2026. The activity brought together young people from diverse cultural backgrounds to explore intercultural understanding, inclusion, and the role of diversity in Maltese society.

Creating Space for Dialogue and Connection

The workshop welcomed 21 participants aged 14-35, including both Maltese youth and multinational young people living, studying, or working in Malta. In an increasingly international and multicultural context, the event aimed to provide a safe and engaging space where participants could openly share experiences, challenge stereotypes, and learn from one another.

Through non-formal learning methods, facilitated discussions, and collaborative exercises, participants reflected on themes such as:

  • cultural identity and belonging,

  • intercultural communication,

  • stereotypes and perceptions,

  • empathy, teamwork, and respectful dialogue.

The activities encouraged active participation and critical reflection, helping young people develop the confidence and skills needed to interact positively in diverse communities.

The Collective Mosaic: A Symbol of Unity

One of the highlights of the event was the creation of a collective mosaic artwork, named “Intercultural Malta”. Each participant contributed a unique piece, representing their background, perspective, and personal experience. When combined, the pieces formed a vibrant mosaic that symbolised how diversity strengthens communities rather than divides them.

The creation served as a powerful visual reminder that inclusion is built through collaboration, mutual respect, and the willingness to understand one another.

Impact and Learning Outcomes

By the end of the workshop, participants reported increased awareness of cultural diversity in Malta and a deeper understanding of intercultural dialogue. The activity also strengthened key soft skills such as communication, empathy, critical thinking, and teamwork.

The workshop demonstrated how creative and participatory approaches can foster meaningful connections between young people from different backgrounds and encourage a stronger sense of inclusion and solidarity.

Looking Ahead

Malta Mosaic is part of TDM 2000 Malta’s ongoing commitment to promoting active citizenship, intercultural understanding, and youth participation. The success of this European Youth Week 2026 activity highlights the importance of creating opportunities where young people can meet, exchange perspectives, and build more inclusive communities together.

We extend our sincere thanks to all participants, facilitators, and partners who contributed to making the event a success.
